Wheel ruts on the motorway, a passing lorry, sudden crosswinds on a bridge or even a few extra km/h on the speedometer – that’s all it takes for your caravan or utility trailer to start snaking. In the worst case, your outfit can be out of control in a matter of seconds. We’ve all seen the pictures of such accidents – and often, there’s not much left of the trailer afterwards.

There are practical solutions to actively counteract the risk of trailer snaking. Alongside driving defensively, loading correctly and using a mechanical stabiliser coupling, we also recommend installing an electromechanical anti-snaking system (ATC). The ATC detects even the smallest swaying movements and brings your trailer back under control.

ATC: precision sensors help in dangerous situations
Sophisticated electronics to combat trailer sway
The ATC's operation is based on sophisticated electronics: so-called lateral acceleration sensors continuously monitor the pendulum movements on the trailer axle. If these exceed the tolerance limits set in the system, the ATC intervenes.
Specifically, this means: as soon as the caravan or trailer begins to sway due to, for example, slightly excessive speed or a strong gust of wind, the sensors detect these sideways movements – and the ATC gently applies the trailer brakes via Bowden cables. With this short, but effective intervention, the entire outfit is stretched and stabilised.
As the driver, this feels as if the vehicle is "floating" for a few seconds – much like a gently moving boat. You may notice a brief gentle deceleration, followed by normal driving conditions resuming as usual.
By the way, the ATC records every such intervention. If you are interested to know whether the installation was worthwhile, your specialist workshop can check how many times the system has responded during your journeys.
Which caravans or utility trailers are suitable for the ATC?
The ATC can be installed in all caravans and utility trailers with an AL-KO VT chassis, model year 1998 onwards and a permissible gross weight up to 3.5 t. If your manufacturer does not offer factory installation or if you own a slightly older trailer, retrofitting is possible in almost all cases without issue.
It does not matter if your trailer has one, two or three axles. AL-KO VT offers a suitable solution for all three. This means you can equip not only your caravan, but also horse trailers, vehicle transport trailers, construction machinery trailers, sales trailers, tipping trailers and many more with this important safety feature. You only need to choose the correct weight class for your caravan or utility trailer.

What is the difference between the Caravan ATC and the Utility Trailer ATC?
Weight fluctuations due to payloads are crucial
The ATC version for caravans, due to usually low payloads, assumes a relatively constant weight. The version for utility trailers, on the other hand, is even more intelligent: it automatically adapts to significant weight fluctuations.
This ensures optimum driving safety, regardless of whether you're, for example, towing a horse trailer empty, with one animal, or with several. The same goes for transporting boats, equipment, or heavy tools.
ATC or trailer ESP?
Two different systems that complement each other
A frequent question: doesn’t fitting trailer ESP to the towing vehicle serve the same purpose as an anti-snaking system in the caravan or utility trailer? The answer is clear: no.
Trailer ESP is a highly useful feature and certainly a helpful addition to the ATC, but the operating principles are fundamentally different: trailer ESP reacts with a delay – only when the snaking movements of the trailer have already been transmitted to the towing vehicle. In contrast, the ATC intervenes as soon as the first minor tolerance is exceeded at the trailer axle. Ideally, both systems should be combined.

How much does an ATC cost?

The prices for the ATC are as follows:
- for caravans: €1,150 (RRP)
- for utility trailers: €850 (RRP)
- each plus installation – the exact cost may vary depending on your dealer.
In our in-house workshops, the current price for the ATC, including installation and brake service, is approximately €1,400.
