Trailer axles for car trailers

Axle solutions for different vehicle concepts

Trailer axles support the vehicle load, connect the suspension and wheels, and influence suspension characteristics and driving stability. For manufacturers and dealers, precise coordination with the vehicle weight, structure and area of application is essential.

AL-KO VT offers car trailer axles for different weight classes and requirements. The range extends from braked and unbraked standard axles through to tandem, tridem and special solutions. Depending on the vehicle concept, a range of suspensions, installation dimensions, wheel connections and brake systems are available.

Which trailer axle suits my vehicle concept?

The correct axle is not determined solely by the permissible gross weight. Decisive factors include axle load, axle configuration, suspension, brake system, mounting and contact dimensions as well as wheel connection.

The intended use also plays an important role. A light utility trailer requires different axle technology from a car transporter, sales trailer or heavy commercial trailer.

Unbraked axles with hexagonal rubber suspension

For lightweight to medium trailer concepts

The AL-KO VT hexagonal rubber suspension combines independent wheel suspension with a maintenance-free suspension. Each wheel is sprung individually, so road irregularities only affect the relevant side of the vehicle.

Large spring travel and high self-damping support smooth driving and protect the bodywork and load. Unbraked versions are available with 750, 1,000, 1,300, 1,500 and 1,800 kg axle load.

Braked axles with hexagonal rubber suspension

For higher axle loads and demanding applications

Braked trailer axles combine hexagonal rubber suspension with a wheel brake matched to the respective weight class. This means that numerous solutions are available for single-axle and multi-axle configurations.

Depending on the version, maintenance-free compact bearings and brake drums with cooling fins are included. For various variants, AAA, AL-KO Automatic Adjustment for automatic brake shoe adjustment is also available. Braked single axles are available in different weight classes up to 4,000 kg axle load.

    Trailer axles with leaf springs

    Modular for different vehicle designs

Leaf spring axles are available in braked and unbraked versions. Their modular design offers a variety of options for integration into the respective vehicle concept.

Unbraked versions are available with 750, 1,500 and 1,800 kg axle load. Braked versions are available with 1,500 and 1,800 kg axle load.

    Special axles for unique requirements

Standard axles cover many applications. For special vehicle features or design requirements, additional specialised axle solutions are also available.

    Tandem units and tridem axles

For multi-axle trailers, AL-KO VT offers tandem units and tridem solutions. Braked tandem units are available for various weight classes up to 3,500 kg.

    Half axles

Half axles provide additional design flexibility when a full-length axle does not suit the vehicle concept. Both braked and unbraked versions for different axle loads are available.

    Axles with drive

Braked axles with drive are suitable for applications where the wheel movement also needs to provide mechanical power. Typical examples include salt spreader trailers or trailers with refrigeration units.

This solution operates independently from the towing vehicle, so a PTO connection on the towing vehicle is not required.

    Lowering axles

Lowering axles facilitate loading and unloading by allowing the bodywork to be hydraulically lowered. Depending on the version, lowering ranges of up to 140, 190 or 210 mm are possible.

These systems are suitable for car transporters, sales trailers and commercial trailers, among others.

    Axles for special braking systems

For corresponding vehicle concepts, axles for air-braked trailers as well as axles for hydraulically braked trailers are also available.

Wheel hubs, wheel brakes and accessories for axles

The axle range also includes wheel hubs, wheel brakes and matching accessories. Depending on the axle system, shock absorbers, shock absorber brackets and components for multi-axle configurations are also available.

How to choose the right trailer axle

For a technical preselection, the axle load, number of axles, brake system, suspension, installation dimensions, wheel connection and area of use should be known. These details provide the basis for the further development of the axle solution.

For OEM projects, the exact selection should always be based on the vehicle data and the design requirements.

Frequently asked questions about trailer axles

The suitable trailer axle depends on axle load, vehicle concept, brake system, installation dimensions and wheel connection. In addition, the intended area of use must be considered. Therefore, the technical vehicle data is required for precise configuration.

Whether a braked or unbraked axle is required depends on the vehicle weight, vehicle concept and applicable approval requirements. Braked axles are available for higher weight classes and specific applications.

The axle load is the load transmitted via one axle to the road surface. In the design, vehicle weight, payload, axle arrangement and weight distribution must be considered. In tandem and tridem vehicles, the load is distributed over several axles.

The AL-KO VT hexagonal rubber suspension combines independent wheel suspension with large spring travel and high self-damping. Each wheel is sprung independently. The suspension is maintenance-free.

The range includes braked and unbraked hexagonal rubber suspension axles, leaf spring axles and various special axles. These include tandem and tridem solutions, half axles, axles with drive, lowering axles and versions for special braking systems.
