Why do caravans start to sway?

If this movement increases, the caravan starts to push the towing vehicle from side to side, and in the worst case, the outfit may become unstable and cause a serious accident. This is exactly where AL-KO VT safety systems step in: they dampen or actively brake the movement before it becomes dangerous.

ATC Anti-Snaking System
Active stabilisation for critical swaying movements
Gusts of wind, evasive manoeuvres or the slipstream from overtaking vehicles can cause a caravan to start swaying. The AL-KO VT Trailer Control (ATC) continuously monitors lateral movements of your caravan.
If the swaying exceeds a defined tolerance, the system automatically applies the wheel brakes via the Bowden cables. Gentle braking stretches out the outfit and dampens the swaying. The intervention is perceptible to the driver, but the brake lights do not illuminate.
The ATC does not alter the critical speed range of the caravan or the requirements for the 100 km/h approval. An appropriate speed, correct loading, proper tyre pressure and the right nose weight remain crucial.
The system is available for compatible caravans with AL-KO VT chassis from model year 1998 onwards. The correct version depends on axle configuration and vehicle weight. Whether retrofitting is possible must be checked for each individual vehicle. Installation is carried out by a qualified specialist workshop or AL-KO VT service centre.
