When choosing a towbar, it is not just the manufacturer and model that matter. Year of manufacture, chassis type, existing chassis extensions and the intended use also play an important role. For a bicycle carrier, the permissible noseweight is especially relevant. When towing a trailer the load-carrying capacity during driving also needs to be considered, as this is defined by the D-value.
Good to know: Special attention is needed if an AL-KO VT chassis extension is already installed. In this case, only the original towbars and reinforcement components intended for it may be used. Only the fully tested system, comprising chassis extension, reinforcement and towbar, ensures the required approval and safety.

It is possible to retrofit a towbar to many motorhomes. Whether a towbar is available depends, among other things, on the base vehicle, body, year of manufacture, chassis, existing chassis extension and permissible load values. Suitability must always be individually checked for your particular vehicle.
The permissible trailer load is shown in the vehicle documents. In addition, the noseweight and load limits of the towbar must also be observed.
The towbar is attached to the chassis or an approved chassis extension and connected with a matching electric cable set. Installation should be carried out by a >specialist workshop .
The D-value defines the towbar's load-carrying capacity during driving with a trailer. The noseweight indicates the maximum vertical weight allowed on the towbar. The permissible values for the vehicle, chassis, chassis extension and towbar are always decisive.
Whether a bicycle carrier or rear carrier can be fitted depends on the approval of the carrier and the towbar. Particular attention must be paid to the permissible noseweight, total weight of the carrier and load, the rear axle load and the vehicle-specific load limits. Suitability must be checked for each individual vehicle combination.
If an AL-KO VT chassis extension is fitted, only the designated and type-approved towbars and reinforcement components can be installed. Combining with unauthorised parts from other manufacturers has not been tested for this system and may affect the vehicle’s type approval. Always have a specialist check your specific vehicle configuration prior to installation.
