Manoeuvring systems for caravans: comfortable and safe manoeuvring at the touch of a button
A holiday with a caravan offers freedom and independence, which many travellers value. However, while the journey to your dream destination is often full of adventure and anticipation, manoeuvring the caravan on the campsite, on the driveway at home, or in winter storage can be a real challenge. This is where the increasingly popular manoeuvring systems come in: They make manoeuvring not only more comfortable, but even enjoyable!
What is a caravan manoeuvring system?
In broad terms, a manoeuvring system is an electronic aid designed to move a caravan without the need for physical effort or a towing vehicle.
These systems are usually mounted on the chassis or the wheels and allow you to move, rotate, and precisely position the caravan with ease. They are particularly useful on sloping, uneven, or tight campsites, or when the caravan needs to be positioned in a specific orientation.
The wheel-mounted drive units are typically controlled using a remote control. For those unfamiliar with the technology, it can look as if the caravan is moving by itself – often leading to amused reactions from fellow campers.
Which manoeuvring systems does AL-KO VT offer?
At AL-KO VT, you can choose between two different manoeuvring systems:
The fully automatic MAMMUT and the semi-automatic RANGER.
Both options can be retrofitted to the vast majority of caravans without any problems. However, we recommend that installation is carried out at one of our Customer Centres or by a specialist partner workshop, as the procedure can often be rather complex.
AL-KO VT MAMMUT
The MAMMUT ensures maximum manoeuvring precision and comfort thanks to its unique joystick remote control and sophisticated technology. A variant for use on utility trailers is also available.
Its millimetre-precise control and the capability to turn even heavy or long caravans 360 degrees on the spot make it an indispensable travelling companion.
The MAMMUT can overcome obstacles up to 4 cm high and manage gradients of up to 28 percent (single axle) or up to 15 percent (tandem axle). It is suitable for single-axle caravans up to 2.5 t permissible gross weight and tandem axle caravans up to 3.0 t.
AL-KO VT RANGER
The RANGER is suitable for single-axle caravans up to 1.8 t or tandem axle caravans up to 2.5 t.
Like its “big brother”, the MAMMUT, it also allows for precise manoeuvring and can turn the caravan 360 degrees on the spot. Obstacles up to 2 cm high or gradients of up to 18 percent present no problem for it.
Because the RANGER is operated manually by hand crank, which does require some agility and strength, we recommend it for those without physical limitations who don’t mind a bit of a workout before parking up.
Who is a manoeuvring system suitable for?
Manoeuvring systems are suitable for a wide range of caravan users – especially those who have difficulty manoeuvring by hand or simply want greater convenience and control.
Those who particularly benefit from such a system include:
- Solo travellers: Manoeuvring a caravan alone can be a laborious task. A manoeuvring system enables them to position the caravan easily and precisely without having to rely on help from others.
- Older people: As we get older, the physical exertion of pushing and pulling a heavy caravan can become more of a challenge. A manoeuvring system greatly reduces the physical effort required, enabling older campers to keep enjoying their trips without worrying about manoeuvring.
- People with disabilities: For those with limited mobility or other disabilities, manoeuvring systems provide a practical solution to move the caravan without physical strain.
- Owners of heavy caravans: Large and heavy caravans are often extremely difficult to park by hand, even with help from neighbours on site. A manoeuvring system supplies the necessary power to move such models with ease.
The advantages of manoeuvring systems
A manoeuvring system offers a number of advantages:
- Precision: Manoeuvring systems enable you to control and position your caravan with exact precision, which is especially useful on narrow pitches or in tricky conditions.
- Safety: The systems minimise the risk of accidents or damage to the caravan, as well as to posts, walls or other vehicles, since they offer controlled movement.
- Comfort: With a manoeuvring system, you no longer need to push or pull the caravan by hand – particularly useful in bad weather or on uneven ground.
- Independence: A manoeuvring system lets you move the caravan without help from others – a significant boost to your independence while travelling.
- Protection of the towing vehicle: Normally, when hitching the caravan to the towing vehicle, a reversing camera or a second person to guide you is necessary to avoid damaging the car’s bumper. With a manoeuvring system, you can simply guide the caravan directly to the coupling of the towing vehicle and set off in no time.
