Driving safety for caravans: the ATC and other important helpers

Travel safely with caravan accessories from AL-KO VT

Reliable systems for controlled driving behaviour

Driving safety for the caravan means systems such as the AL-KO VT ATC keep the outfit stable in crosswinds and at higher speeds. They intervene exactly when the caravan starts to snake or threatens to break away. Here we present the key solutions for increased safety.

Caravan driving safety at a glance

    • The ATC anti-snaking system automatically brakes the onset of swaying without illuminating the brake lights
    • Stabiliser coupling damps snaking and pitching directly at the coupling head
    • Hydraulic shock absorbers reduce axle aftershocks and are a requirement for Tempo 100 approval
    • Wheel brakes maintain short braking distances with automatic adjustment
    • Retrofitting possible for most caravans via AL-KO VT service centres

Why do caravans start to sway?

A caravan can begin to snake at higher speeds, in crosswinds, during sudden evasive manoeuvres or when overtaken by lorries. If this movement increases, the caravan pushes the tow vehicle from side to side until, in the worst case, the entire outfit breaks away and causes a serious accident. This is exactly where AL-KO VT safety systems come into play: they dampen this movement or actively brake it before it becomes dangerous.

Four systems provide safety for the caravan. They act at different points and can be combined:

    Anti-snaking system ATC

Active stabilisation of critical swaying movements

Squalls, swerving or the air pressure from overtaking vehicles can cause a caravan to sway. AL-KO VT Trailer Control (ATC) therefore continuously monitors the caravan’s lateral movements.

If the swaying exceeds a defined tolerance, the system automatically applies the wheel brakes via the Bowden cables. Gentle braking straightens the outfit and damps the swaying. The intervention is noticeable to the driver, but the brake lights do not illuminate.

The ATC does not alter the caravan’s critical speed range or the requirements for Tempo 100 approval. Appropriate speed, correct load distribution, correct tyre pressure and suitable noseweight remain essential.

The system is available for compatible caravans with AL-KO VT chassis from model year 1998 onwards. The right version depends on axle configuration and vehicle weight. Retrofitting suitability must always be checked for each vehicle. Installation is carried out by a qualified specialist workshop or an AL-KO VT service centre.

    Your benefits

    • Continuous monitoring of lateral movements
    • Automatic brake intervention for critical swaying
    • Gentle stabilisation of the outfit
    • Versions for single- and tandem-axle caravans up to 3,500 kg
    • Retrofitting possible for compatible AL-KO VT chassis from model year 1998

    Stabiliser coupling AKS 3004

Maximum damping of pitch and snaking movements

The AL-KO VT Stabiliser coupling AKS™ 3004 reduces snaking and pitching of the caravan right from the outset. Once coupled up, the stabilising function is activated with the handle, pressing four friction pads onto the coupling head to dampen unwanted movements during travel.

Unlike the electronically controlled ATC, the stabiliser coupling operates mechanically. Both systems serve distinct purposes and can be combined: The AKS™ 3004 damps snaking and pitching, while the ATC automatically engages the wheel brakes in critical situations.

The stabiliser coupling AKS™ 3004 is suitable for trailers up to 3,000 kg permissible gross weight and a maximum noseweight of 150 kg. Fitting requires a coupling head with 50 mm diameter as well as a suitable horizontal or crossed bolt connection. The exact installation measurements must be checked before retrofitting.

    Your benefits

    • Mechanical damping of snaking and pitching
    • Four friction pads for effective stabilisation
    • For trailers up to 3,000 kg permissible gross weight
    • Maximum noseweight of 150 kg
    • Can be combined with the Anti-snaking system ATC

AL-KO VT shock absorbers for caravans

Vibration damping matched to the vehicle weight

Uneven road surfaces can cause oscillations in the caravan chassis. Suitable shock absorbers dampen these movements, support better road contact and improve driving and braking stability.

It is crucial to match the absorber to the permissible gross weight and axle configuration of the caravan. A shock absorber with an incorrect weight range will not deliver the intended effect. This is why AL-KO VT offers different models for single- and tandem-axle caravans. Colour coding helps assign them to the correct weight class.

For a Tempo 100 approval, hydraulic shock absorbers affect the permissible mass ratio between caravan and towing vehicle, but are not the only requirement. Whether an outfit qualifies for Tempo 100 depends on the whole vehicle combination and the applicable legal regulations.

Retrofitting is possible on many AL-KO VT axles. Depending on the swing arm, the required shock absorber brackets are bolted, inserted or welded according to the manufacturer's specifications. Suitability must be checked for each vehicle.

    Your benefits

    • Effective chassis vibration damping
    • Better road contact and stability
    • Versions for various weight classes
    • Options for single- and tandem-axle caravans
    • Retrofitting possible for suitable AL-KO VT axles

Frequently asked questions on caravan driving safety

Driving safety systems play a central role in ensuring stable and controlled handling of caravan outfits. The following questions and answers explain how AL-KO VT systems work, their differences, and when retrofitting is especially worthwhile.

A lateral acceleration sensor continually measures the caravan’s side movement. If the ATC detects critical swaying, it uses the Bowden cables to engage the caravan’s wheel brakes. This gentle braking can help stabilise the outfit. The intervention is automatic and the brake lights do not illuminate.

An anti-snaking system intervenes at the crucial moment when an outfit starts to sway. It stabilises the caravan before the driver is able to react. This reduces the risk of losing control in crosswinds or evasive manoeuvres.

As soon as the sensor detects a snaking movement, the ATC gently applies both wheels’ brakes with about 10 per cent of braking force. This targeted braking straightens the caravan, calming it before oscillations increase.

Many older caravans do not yet have an electronic anti-snaking system. The ATC can be retrofitted to AL-KO VT chassis from model year 1998 and brings them up to current safety standards. You can also add a stabiliser coupling and shock absorbers.

The stabiliser coupling ensures noticeably greater stability on every journey. The ATC is active protection in emergencies and is especially useful for long motorway trips. Shock absorbers and a well-adjusted brake are the foundation and are compulsory for Tempo 100 approval.

Experienced users sometimes fit the stabiliser coupling themselves. However, ATC and any work on the brakes should be left to an AL-KO VT service centre, as they are safety-related and must be adjusted correctly.

The ATC is an active system, using sensors to automatically intervene and brake when needed.
A stabiliser coupling such as the AKS™ 3004 operates mechanically at all times and reduces snaking movements from the outset. Both systems work together perfectly for maximum driving safety.

Shock absorbers are legally required for Tempo 100 approval. Regardless of this, they always enhance driving safety, as they improve road contact and prevent dangerous bouncing of the outfit.

Shock absorbers must match the weight of the trailer. AL-KO VT therefore offers specially matched models for the different weight classes to ensure optimal damping, stability and driving comfort.

The AAA Premium Brake automatically adjusts the wheel brake as soon as excessive play occurs. This keeps braking distances consistently short with no need for manual adjustment – a clear safety benefit in everyday use.

Yes, many driving safety systems from AL-KO VT are optionally retrofittable – including ATC, shock absorbers, stabiliser couplings and the self-adjusting wheel brake AAA Premium Brake. Compatibility depends on caravan model and year of manufacture.

    Retrofitting is particularly worthwhile for:

    • Frequent drivers and long-distance travellers
    • Caravans with higher gross weight
    • Journeys in changing weather conditions
    • Caravan owners seeking maximum safety and comfort
